The Annual Flower Edition
Feature Article
"We like to enjoy our gardens and flowers, and also our vegetable plants, from within! It makes the planting, weeding, mulching and pruning efforts even more “worth it” to see your garden not only when you are outside, but also when you are in your home. Nothing pleases me more than walking past our large dining room window and seeing the huge vine of Confederate Jasmine in full bloom and swaying in the breeze."
July 3: Jeannie Pierce explains some of the techniques she uses to plan her gardens. She works at creating great views from inside her house, not just from the curb. Read Jeannie's debut contribution "Bloom With A View"
CSA Farmer
"Be it a peck of pimento peppers, a basket of beans or a selection of squash, CSA vegetables must go from the gardens to the bags, boxes or totes of the CSA members. There maybe as many variations in distribution as there are CSAs and loosely they’d fall into two categories: on-farm pickup and off-farm pickups."
July 10: Beth Lambert Hook talks about managing pick up days on her CSA. Beth explains the amount of work her CSA members put into pick up day in this month's addition: "People Picking Up Picked Produce"

Backyard Gardener
"I remember running through Grandpa Whalen's corn field when I was a child. It was a windy fall evening and I got lost. I jumped up and down trying to shout above the dry rattling stalks but my brothers had already left the field, heading toward the creek. Eventually I found my way out of the maize, far from both creek and farmhouse. I hurried to the house and Grandma who made me a cup of hot cocoa."
July 17: Keith Bellinger shares a story about corn in: "Knee High"
Market Farmer
"The thought of having to control pests organically seems to intimidate a lot of people. Myth has it that we don't use pesticides or herbicides. There are visions of us out in the field picking bugs off plants for hours on end. Let's clear these things up and discover how simple organic pest control really can be."
July 24: THis month Robin Follette discusses some of the options in organic pest control for market farmers. She busts the myth that organic growers never use herbicides and pesticides. Robin also tells us how to help prevent pest problems before the arise in "Organic Pest Control"
